SHRM Certification Requirements
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Certification is a prestigious credential that validates the expertise and proficiency of HR professionals worldwide. Obtaining a SHRM certification demonstrates a commitment to the HR profession, a mastery of crucial HR skills, and an adherence to the highest standards of ethical practice.
To find out more about the SHRM Certification, here is an in-depth look at the requirements:
SHRM Eligibility Criteria
SHRM-CP (as per the SHRM Certification Handbook)
The SHRM-CP certification is for individuals who perform general HR/HR-related duties; or for those pursuing a career in human resource management. No prior HR experience is required. High school degree or equivalent is required.
The SHRM-CP exam is designed to assess the competency level of those who engage in HR work at the operational level. Work at this level includes duties such as implementing HR policies, supporting day-to-day HR functions or serving as an HR point of contact for staff and stakeholders.
SHRM-SCP (as per the SHRM Certification Handbook)
The SHRM-SCP certification is for individuals who have a work history of at least three years performing strategic-level HR/HR-related duties; or for SHRM-CP certification-holders who have held the certification for at least three years and are working in, or are in the process of transitioning to, a strategic-level role.
The SHRM-SCP exam is designed to assess the competency level of those who engage in HR work at the strategic level. Work at this level includes duties such as developing HR policies and/or procedures, overseeing the execution of integrated HR operations, directing an entire HR enterprise or leading the alignment of HR strategies to organizational goals.
Experience may be either salaried or hourly.

Passing the SHRM Certification Exam
The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams consist of 134 multiple-choice questions, of which 80 are stand-alone knowledge-based questions and 54 are situational judgment items.
Knowledge items are designed to assess an examinee’s understanding or application of factual information and are focused on two knowledge item types based on the content of the SHRM BASK. Knowledge Items (KIs) cover key concept topics in the HR Knowledge Domains, while Foundational Knowledge Items (FKIs) cover key concept topics in the Behavioral Competency Clusters. Examinees receive credit for selecting the correct answer to a given question; otherwise, no credit is awarded.

Situational judgment items are designed to assess an examinee’s judgment and decision-making skills as they relate to the behavioral competencies outlined in the SHRM BASK. Examinees are presented with realistic work-related scenarios and are asked to choose the best of several possible actions to resolve or address the issues described in each scenario. Although more than one strategy may be effective for addressing actual work-related scenarios, examinees receive credit only for choosing the best possible or most effective course of action.
SHRM Recertification
To recertify and maintain their SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP, certification-holders must earn 60 professional development credits (PDCs) over a three-year period or retake the certification exam.
Adherence to the SHRM Code of Ethics
Certified professionals are expected to adhere to the SHRM Code of Ethics, which outlines the ethical standards and principles that govern the conduct of HR professionals. This code emphasizes integrity, confidentiality, respect for diversity, and a commitment to promoting fair and equitable treatment in the workplace.
In conclusion, obtaining SHRM certification requires a combination of education, professional experience, passing a rigorous exam, adherence to ethical standards, and a commitment to ongoing professional development. SHRM-certified professionals are recognized for their expertise and dedication to advancing the HR profession, making them valuable assets to organizations worldwide.
