Test Taking Tip
July 31, 2026
You’ve spent weeks studying for your HR certification exam. Then test day arrives, and the first difficult question makes you second-guess yourself. Feeling nervous doesn’t mean you’re unprepared. The key is having a plan for staying focused when the pressure builds.
Use these test-taking tips to approach your PHR or SPHR exam with greater confidence.
Prepare Before Test Day
Review your exam provider’s current instructions so you know what to expect, including identification requirements, testing procedures, and permitted items.
If you’re testing at a location, plan your route and arrival time. If you’re testing remotely, complete the required equipment checks and prepare your testing space in advance.
Give yourself time to rest. A last-minute review can help refresh familiar concepts, but trying to learn everything the night before can leave you feeling overwhelmed.
Pause When You Feel Overwhelmed
If nerves begin to interrupt your concentration, take a brief pause. Relax your shoulders, release any tension in your jaw, and take a few slow breaths.
Bring your attention back to the question in front of you. You don’t need to solve the entire exam at once—just work through one question at a time.
Read the Question Carefully
Before looking for the correct answer, identify exactly what the question is asking. Pay attention to words such as first, best, most, and least.
For scenario questions, consider the facts provided rather than adding assumptions from your own workplace experience. An answer that sounds reasonable may not address the specific situation described.
Have a Plan for Difficult Questions
A challenging question doesn’t mean the rest of the exam will go poorly. Eliminate answers you can confidently rule out, then compare the remaining choices against the question.
Follow the navigation and review options available for your specific exam. Avoid letting one difficult question consume a disproportionate amount of your testing time.
Practice Your Approach Before the Exam
Use practice questions to build a consistent routine: read carefully, identify the task, evaluate the choices, and select your answer.
Review why you missed a question—not just which answer was correct. This can help you identify concepts to revisit and habits to improve before test day.
